Gulliver's Travels movie review

Gulliver's Travels: ** 1/2 (out of four)
Starring: Jack Black, Amanda Peet, Jason Segel, Chris O' Dowd, Emily Blunt and Billy Connolly. Directed by Rob Letterman. Approximately 85 minutes. Playing at major theaters.

In the year 1726, Jonathan Swift wrote a novel called Gulliver's Travels. It told the story of Lemuel Gulliver, a man who goes on these weird adventures. One of his most famous adventures is to the Land Of Lilliput, a place with many tiny people. 284 years later, director Rob Letterman releases the movie Gulliver's Travels, starring Jack Black as Lemuel Gulliver.
Gulliver is a guy who is stuck in the mailroom at this office building. He doesn't have the best life because he can't ask his crush Darcy (Amanda Peet) out on a date and the new guy at the mailroom is now his boss.
When Gulliver attempts to ask Darcy out, he chickens out and lies to her about being a travel writer. She asks him for a travel writing excerpt and when he tries to write something, he can't get anything. So, he does a little thing called plagiarism. He copies travel writing articles from the Internet and some travel books. He hands them in to Darcy and she sends him off to find out more about the Bermuda Triangle.
When Gulliver gets to Bermuda, he is given a boat and pretty soon, he is thrust into a large whirlpool. When he wakes up, he finds himself tied down by these little people led by an annoying general named Edward Edwardian (Chris O' Dowd). These little people are called Lilliputians. Some other people of this kind are a princess (Emily Blunt), a prisoner named Horatio (Jason Segel) and a king (Billy Connolly).
Gulliver is referred to as The Beast, but then he saves the kingdom from a fire and attack from other tiny people. He puts out the fire by peeing on it. Gross, I know, but believe it or not, he becomes very well respected. Sooner or later, Gulliver is telling more lies, such as saying he is President the Awesome back in Manhattan and that Darcy is his lover.

Gulliver also makes the Lilliputians build him a luxurious and he also tries helping Horatio win the heart of the princess. Sounds nice, huh? Yeah, well, that doesn't last very long.
See, Edward Edwardian decides to turn the Lilliputians against Gulliver.

This movie has some pretty funny scenes. For example, Gulliver says to the princess that he wants to stay at her kingdom. She says, ``But what about the White House and your special lady, Darcy?'' He replies by saying, ``Um, I don't know. I think Vice President Yoda can take care of things.''
However, there are some weak moments. For example, the film gets real sappy when the romance kicks in. Also, at the end, there is a terrible musical number to the song War. Oh good Lord, it is terrible.
But other than that, the movie has some good moments. Jack Black is entertaining in this movie. He usually is, but he is still not a perfect movie star. He has made the not so good movies like Year One and Nacho Libre. I think that kids will probably enjoy it. I don't know if adults will like it as much as the kids, but if they don't, it doesn't really matter. The movie is made for kids to enjoy. So, I think that this is a film for kids to check out. Don't see it in 3D. It's not very effective.

Revealing Of the Who Am I?

When I started doing this blog, I did a little thing called Who Am I? It was where I gave clues about famous people and you readers would try to guess who the person was. Well, the first one I did was Michael Douglas. That is all I have to say. Bye.

Tron: Legacy movie review

Tron: Legacy: ***(stars out of four)
Starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund,
Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett and Michael
Sheen. Directed by Joseph Kosinski.
Approximately 126 minutes. Playing
at major theaters. Rated PG.

In 1982, Jeff Bridges starred in a movie called Tron. It told the story of Kevin Flynn, a guy who gets put into a video game and tries to get out. I saw this movie a few years ago. I had rented it on video. I have to say, it was not a very good movie. There was only one part that struck me as entertaining. There is this thing called ``light cycling''. Light cycling are these battles on these bright vehicles where you try and eliminate the other participants.
Fast forward 28 years later and we have a sequel called Tron: Legacy. This movie has the same character from the first film, but the story focuses more on Kevin's son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund). Years ago, Kevin disappeared from Sam when Sam was a child and no one knew what had happened to Kevin.
As an adult, Sam is a troubled young man. He bothers his father's company Encom annually and 15 minutes or so into the movie, he is arrested by cops for being a troublemaker. When Sam goes back to his home, he sees one of his father's co-workers. The co-worker says that he was paged and the page came from Kevin's office. Apparently, that number has been disconnected for a long time.
So, that very night, Sam takes his father's motorcycle over to his father's office and is soon zapped into the same place his father was years ago, only this time, the place has been updated. The costumes are different, the girls are prettier and the structure is different. At this place, Sam meets Clu (also played by Jeff Bridges), Kevin's creation that went evil, Gem (Beau Garrett), a pretty girl, Quorra (Olivia Wilde), Kevin's assistant and Zeus (Michael Sheen), a man who owns a club.
When Sam arrives at this strange place, these good looking girls take away his Earth clothes, give him new clothes and he is sent to participate in deadly games such as light cycling and odd disc fights. In the middle of a light cycling battle, Sam meets Quorra and is taken to Kevin's place. Kevin is in his sixties at least, has stubble and gray hair. Sam decides to take Quorra and Kevin back to Earth. There is a portal that closes in eight hours and it is their only ticket back to Earth until it's opened up again.
Clu finds out about this and plans to kill Quorra, Sam and Kevin. He creates an army and orders them to kill them all.
I have to say, this is a better movie than the first film. Why? I will tell you why. The special effects are better, it's more interesting and the action is better. The girls aren't too bad looking, either. The weakest point of this movie would probably have to be the acting. The acting isn't terrible, but it's not great, either. The soundtrack by French techno duo Daft Punk fit the movie, even if it's not something I'd put on my iPod.
The costumes were way better than the costumes in the 1982 film. In the first movie, the costumes were sort of gray and bright blue. In this movie, the costumes were black with colors such as blue, green or orange. The action in the first film was lame, except for the light cycling. The other action was basically hitting each other with batons. I also don't have a great memory of pretty girls in the first film. I don't remember much of the acting in the first movie, so I can't really say anything bad. The soundtrack wasn't memorable in the first movie, either.
This is not the best film that I have ever seen in my entire life. Would I see it again? Yeah, sure, why not? If you parents think it sounds too dark for kids, that's okay. If you like the sound of this movie, then I think you should give it a try.
