The Smurfs
* (out of four)
Starring Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara. Directed by Raja Gosnell. Approximately 102 minutes. Playing at major theaters. Rated G.

``The Smurfs'' is a terrible movie. There are hardly any laughs in the film and when the movie tries to be sweet and touching, it just comes across as corny. If you are a fan of the Smurfs, you will probably enjoy this movie. Little kids might enjoy it, too, because of the puns and Hank Azaria getting injured, but if you aren't a little kid who enjoys puns and Hank Azaria getting injured or a fan of the Smurfs, don't see this movie.
Here's what happens in the film. These little blue creatures called Smurfs live in a secret location in a forest with mushrooms for houses. The evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) wants to capture the Smurfs so he can extract their essence to make him invincible. When Gargamel attacks the Smurfs, the Smurfs Clumsy (voiced by Anton Yelchin), Grouchy (voiced by George Lopez), Papa (voiced by Jonathan Winters), Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry), Brainy (voiced by Fred Armisen) and Gutsy (voiced by Alan Cumming) run away and fall through a magical portal that lands them in New York City. When they land there, they end up living with a couple (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) who are expecting a child. Meanwhile, Gargamel and his cat Azrael (voiced by Frank Welker) go through the portal and try to catch the Smurfs.
I said earlier in the review that little kids or fans of the little blue creatures might enjoy this movie. They probably will. But if you aren't a little kid or a fan of the Smurfs, I suggest that you skip this movie.

Winnie the Pooh review

Winnie the Pooh
*** (out of four)
Includes the voices of Jim Cummings, Tom Kenny, Craig Ferguson and John Cleese. Directed by Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall. Approximately 63 minutes. Playing in some theaters. Rated G.

``Winnie the Pooh is a joyful and visually stunning animated film. It's also got a brisk running time of 63 minutes. It's good fun for the whole family.
Adapted from the popular children's books by A.A. Milne, the story in ``Winnie the Pooh'' involves Winnie the Pooh (voiced by Jim Cummings), Rabbit (voiced by Tom Kenny), Owl (voiced by Craig Ferguson), Piglet (voiced by Travis Oates), Roo (voiced by Wyatt Dean Hall), Kanga (voiced by Kristen Anderson-Lopez) and Tigger (also voiced by Jim Cummings) trying to find a new tail for the depressed donkey Eeyore (voiced by Bud Luckley). They also try and catch the Backson, a creature who they think kidnapped their friend Christopher Robin (Jack Boutler).
I would like to say again that this is a visually stunning film. The hand-drawn animation looks fantastic. It's also a funny movie.
If you have read my review and think that this sounds like a good movie, I would advise you not to watch the trailer. It's not a very good trailer and it might make you not want to see this movie. However, it's your decision.

Spy Kids: All the Time In the World review

Spy Kids: All the Time In the World
** (out of four)
Starring Jessica Alba, Joel Mchale, Mason Cook, Jeremy Piven and Rowan Blanchard. Directed by Robert Rodriguez. Approximately 89 minutes. Playing at major theaters. Rated PG.

It's been 8 years since the last installment in the Spy Kids movie series, written and directed by Robert Rodriguez. Now, in 2011, the fourth Spy Kids movie, ``Spy Kids: All the Time In the World'' has been released. Not only is it being shown in 3D, Scratch-and-Sniff cards are being given out to those who see the movie.
I didn't see ``Spy Kids: All the Time In the World'' in 3D. When I saw it, I was given a Scratch-and-Sniff card, but I didn't use it. I think it's a stupid sounding concept, but some might like it.
In the movie, retired spy Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba) is trying to live a normal life with her husband (Joel Mchale), her two step-kids (Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook) and her baby. However, Marissa is forced to get back into the spy game to stop the evil Timekeeper who is trying to steal time from the whole world. Also helping to try and stop the Timekeeper are Marissa's step-kids.
``Spy Kids: All the Time In the World'' isn't a very good movie. A lot of jokes don't work and it gets mushy and stupid when the movie tries to explain the importance of family time. I mean, I know family time is important, but the movie did a bad job of explaining it in my opinion.
Still, I am giving the movie two stars because the special effects in the movie are cool in a silly and fun sort of way. Also, I did laugh at a couple of the lines delivered from Ricky Gervais voicing a talking robot dog named Argonaut. Also, little kids might like it because when I went to see it, little kids were laughing. However, if you're not a little kid, you probably won't like this movie.

There are some chuckles, but that's not enough to save the movie

Zookeeper:
** (out of four)
Starring Kevin James, Leslie Bibb, Rosario Dawson, Donnie Wahlberg and Ken Jeong. Includes the voices of Nick Nolte, Sylvester Stallone, Cher, Adam Sandler, Judd Appatow, Jon Favreau, Don Rickles and Maya Rudolph. Directed by Frank Coraci. Approximately 101 minutes. Playing at major theaters. Rated G.

Back in 2009, Kevin James, the star of the hit TV show ``King Of Queens'', made a movie called ``Paul Blart: Mall Cop''. It was about a single dad who is a mall cop and tries to take out some robbers who have come into the mall. It was not a work of art, but it was a lot of fun to watch. Also, Kevin James is such a likable actor.
Now, it's 2011 and he has another starring role in a comedy called ``Zookeeper''. He plays Griffin Keyes, a zookeeper who 5 years earlier was dumped by his girlfriend Stephanie (Leslie Bibb) after he proposed to her because she didn't like his job. Now, Stephanie has come back and is showing signs of wanting to get back together with Griffin. Griffin decides that he should quit his job at the zoo and get a job working at his brother's car dealership so he can win back Stephanie.
However, the animals at the zoo don't want Griffin to leave. They think he's a great zookeeper and they decide that they will help him get the girl. Now, you're probably wondering how they would be able to help him get the girl because they are animals. Well, that's a great question. See, these animals can talk. They also have celebrity voices (eg. Sylvester Stallone as a lion, Cher as a lioness, Judd Appatow as an elephant, Adam Sandler as a monkey, etc.).
I have to admit that I was disappointed by this movie. I was expecting this to be a really funny movie. I wasn't expecting art, but I wanted some decent laughs. When I went to see this, though, all I got were some chuckles and that's not enough for me to recommend this movie. Also, at one point, Griffin becomes a big jerk so he can win Stephanie over. It wasn't fun to watch. Also, you know that when Griffin goes to a wedding with a co-worker named Kate (Rosario Dawson) so Stephanie will be jealous and want Griffin back, you know Griffin will end up with the other woman. Plus, there is a character who works with reptiles named Venom (Ken Jeong) who is supposed to be funny. However, I just found him to be creepy.
When I went to see this movie, there were kids there that were laughing out loud at some of the jokes, so I think that kids will really like this, but I don't think the adults taking the kids will have a great time.

Monte Carlo review

Monte Carlo
*** (out of four)
Starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Cory Monteith, Luke Bracey and Pierre Boulanger. Directed by Tom Bezucha. Approximately 109 minutes. Playing at major theaters. Rated G.

``Monte Carlo'' is an entertaining comedy geared towards tween girls. I think that this is the perfect movie for its target audience. It's romantic, funny and it's got Selena Gomez.
It tells the story of three girls named Meg (Leighton Meester), Grace (Selena Gomez) and Emma (Katie Cassidy) who go on a trip to Paris for a tour. The tour sucks and one day, when seeing the Eifel Tower during the tour, they are left behind by the tour bus. The girls go inside a hotel and Grace is mistaken for a British heiress (played also by Selena Gomez). So, the girls live the good life for a few days (eg. living in a fancy hotel room, going to fancy balls, etc.).
``Monte Carlo'' is a predictable, simple comedy with romance. If you are not a fan of Selena Gomez, romance, predictable plots or comedy, you will hate ``Monte Carlo''. However, if you are a tween girl who loves Selena Gomez, romance, comedy and don't mind predictable plots, ``Monte Carlo'' is the movie for you.

Cars 2 movie review

Cars 2:
*** (out of four)
Voices include Owen Wilson, Larry the
Cable Guy, Emily Mortimer, Michael
Caine, Eddie Izzard and John Turturro.
Directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis.
Approximately 113 minutes. Playing at major
theaters. Rated G.

In 2006, an animated feature film from Pixar called ``Cars'' was released. I never saw it for some reason. I think it was because I didn't want to see it.
Well, it's now 2011 and I want to see it. I have seen the sequel, ``Cars 2'', which did not get very good reviews. I didn't want to see ``Cars 2'' right away. I thought that I should wait and see the first film so I could understand the second film. However, I had not seen a movie in a bit and I really wanted to see one, so I decided to go see ``Cars 2''. I mean, it couldn't be that hard to understand.
Fortunately, I was right. It was easy to understand. Here's the story: In the beginning of the movie, a spy named Finn Macmissile (Michael Caine) is checking out an oil platform with a bunch of evil cars and he takes some photos of a special camera they have. He gets involved in a chase with the evil cars when he is caught, but he escapes.
Meanwhile, in the fictional town of Radiator Springs, Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) is waiting for his best buddy, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), to come visit Radiator Springs. When Lightning arrives, Mater is so excited and he does some crazy things with Lightning such as riding on railroad tracks. However, at the end of the day, Lightning tells Mater that he is going on a date with Sally (Bonnie Hunt) and that he will spend the whole day with Mater tomorrow. Mater is crushed and pretends to be a waiter at the restaurant Lightning and Sally go to.
While there, Mater sees an interview about a World Grand Prix run by Miles Axlerod. The purpose of the race is to promote his renewable car fuel Allinol. He sees one of the contestants in the race, Francesco Bernoulli, and he starts saying he's faster than Lightning McQueen. Out of anger, Mater calls in and tells Francesco that Lightning is faster than him. Lightning happens to come in at this point and he decides to compete in the World Grand Prix.
Sally suggests that Lightning should take Mater along, since he sort of made him a contestant in the World Grand Prix. So, Lightning takes Mater along with him, but he quickly regrets it because Mater starts embarrassing him (eg. mistaking wasabi for pistachio ice cream and screaming). When Mater goes to the bathroom, he is mistaken for being a spy by another spy and Finn Macmissile and another agent Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) think he's a spy also. So, they take him away and tell him that someone is going to sabotage the World Grand Prix and they need Mater's help.
This movie does not live up to the high standards of greater Pixar films like ``Toy Story 3'' or ``Up'', but it's still pretty good. I thought that Larry the Cable Guy was funny as Tow Mater, the story was almost never boring and there is a good moral spoken after Lightning gets angry at Mater for messing him up in a race: ``No fight is more important than friendship.'' Plus, the action with the spies is pretty good. Also, the animation is fantastic. For example, when the cars are racing in Italy, Italy looks absolutely beautiful. So, if you are looking for an animated movie with good action, fantastic animation, a good moral and good comedy, you should check out ``Cars 2''. Don't worry. You probably can still enjoy it without seeing the first film.

Mr. Popper's Penguins review

Mr. Popper's Penguins:
*** (out of four)
Starring Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino,
Madelline Carroll, Angela Lansbury
and Clark Gregg. Directed by Mark
Waters. Rated G. Approximately
94 minutes. Playing at major
theaters.

In 1938, a children's book by Richard and Florence Altwater called ``Mr. Popper's Penguins'' was published and now, in 2011, the book has been made into a movie.
I never read the book, but I had heard about the movie. I saw the first trailer for this movie when I went to see ``Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules''. When I first saw the trailer, I thought it looked absolutely dreadful. I didn't laugh once during the trailer. Jim Carrey had not had a hit in a while and it looked like this movie would not be successful.
However, in June, I went to see ``X-Men: First Class'' and they showed a second trailer for ``Mr. Popper's Penguins''. I must say, the second trailer was much better than the first trailer. I laughed a couple of times. So, I decided that I would give the movie a chance.
So, I went to see it on the opening day and I was impressed. It was certainly much better than his last big movie, ``Yes Man''.
I should probably explain what this movie is about. It tells the story of Tom Popper, a divorced businessman who is trying to get an elderly woman (Angela Lansbury) to sell an inn. One day, he receives a crate from his father, who was an explorer. Popper's father has passed away and has left him some penguins. Popper tries to get rid of them, but they keep showing up. However, Popper's children love them. Also, Popper grows closer to his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) when the penguins are around. Meanwhile, a zoologist (Clark Gregg) is after the penguins.
This is a fun movie for little kids because they will think the penguins are cute and funny because penguins fart, fall down, poop and make really loud noises. The parents might have a fun time, too, because there is a scene where the penguins slide around the Guggenheim Museum and crash into a band that is playing at a party. Parents and children will find this funny. Also, Jim Carrey does some good slapstick humor in this film.
This is not the best movie of 2011. The parts with Jim Carrey getting back together with his ex-wife were a little corny and could have been done in a better way. Also, I didn't laugh at every single joke in the movie, such as when Jim Carrey is teaching the penguins to dance and one of the penguins falls down. Still, I thought the penguins were cute and they could be funny and Jim Carrey did a fine job at keeping me entertained. ``Mr. Popper's Penguins'' is a good movie that I think adults should take their kids to see.

Hoodwinked Too: Hood VS Evil review

Hoodwinked Too: Hood VS Evil
*** (out of four)
Includes the voices of Hayden Panettiere, Patrick Warburton, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Joan Cusack, David Ogden Stiers and Cory Edwards. Directed by Mike Disa. Approximately 85 minutes. Playing in major theaters. Rated G.

About five years ago, an animated comedy called ``Hoodwinked''. It was a detective story of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. It was pretty funny when I saw it. It included the voices of Anne Hathaway as Little Red Riding Hood and Patrick Warburton as the Big Bad Wolf.
Now, it's 2011 and Anne Hathaway is not playing Little Red Riding Hood anymore. It is Hayden Panettiere from the TV show ``Heroes''. Patrick Warburton is still the Big Bad Wolf. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I didn't laugh once. It looked like one of the worst movies ever. Still, when I'd heard it had gotten a two and a half out of four in the Toronto Star, I thought I'd give it a chance.
Well, I'm glad I gave it a chance. I laughed quite a bit during the film. There might have been a few too many sentimental messages in the film, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
So, the plot of the movie is Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf and a squirrell named Twitchy (Cory Edwards) trying to save Hansel and Gretel (Bill Hader and Amy Poehler) from an evil witch named Verushka. The evil witch wishes for a recipe for a chocolate truffle that will make you powerful and she kidnaps Little Red Riding Hood's butt-kicking granny (Glenn Close) so she can make the truffle.
In my opinion, I think that this is a movie that kids will adore because it has humor that will probably appeal to them. Also, I think that the adults might enjoy some of the humor in it, too. Anyways, my point is that ``Hoodwinked Too: Hood VS Evil'' is a good movie and I think it's worth seeing.

Rio review

Rio
*** (out of four)
Includes the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, Will.iam and Jamie Foxx. Directed by Carlos Saldanha. Approximately 96 minutes. Playing at major theaters. Rated G.

Back in June, I had seen a trailer for an upcoming animated film called ``Rio''. From what I saw of the trailer, I thought it looked pretty lame. Then, when December came around, I saw a different trailer for it. Was I satisfied? Nope. When March came around, I saw another trailer for it. Again, I was not satisfied.
When April came around, I read the reviews for ``Rio'' and they were pretty positive. The Globe and Mail had given it two and a half out of four. The Toronto Star had given it three out of four. I was okay with those reviews. I decided to give the film a try. This was sort of the case with two other animated movies I had seen in 2011. They were ``Rango'' and ``Mars Needs Moms''. In my opinion, both of them looked terrible. Yet, I still saw them. They were pretty good.
So, I should probably explain the plot of ``Rio'' to you readers. Okay, so really it's about a bird who can't fly named Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) who was born in Rio De Janeiro, but kidnapped by poachers as a baby. He's taken through Minnesota in a truck, but the crate he's in falls out of the back of the truck. He is found by a little girl named Linda (voiced as an adult by Leslie Mann) and is taken care of by her.
Fast forward 15 years later and Linda is a bookstore owner. One day, an ornithologist named Tulio comes into her shop and tells her that Blu is the last male of his kind and that in order to prevent his species from becoming extinct, he must mate with another bird of his kind named Jewel (Anne Hathaway).
So, Tulio, Linda and Blu travel to Rio De Janeiro so Blu can meet Jewel. However, along the way, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by some poachers who have a bird companion named Nigel (Jemaine Clement).
Jewel and Blu escape from the poachers and try and find Linda. Along the way, Blu tries to learn how to fly and meets some other animals such as a Toco Toucan named Rafael (George Lopez), a Cardinal named Pedro (Will.iam), a bulldog named Luiz (Tracy Morgan) and a Canary named Nico (Jamie Foxx).
The animation in this movie, in my opinion, is beautiful. I know that Rio De Janeiro is a place with a lot of slums, but the animation in this film makes it look beautiful. There is one scene where they circle the Christ the Redeemer statue and it looks absolutely beautiful. Plus, some of the writing is pretty funny. I really enjoyed the bulldog Luiz who has a medical condition that makes him drool all the time. This is a great movie for kids and I think that adults will enjoy it, too.

Hop movie review

Hop
** 1/2 (out of four)
Starring James Marsden, Gary Cole, Elizabeth Perkins, Kaley Cuoco and including the voices of Russell Brand, Hugh Laurie and Hank Azaria. Directed by Tim Hill. Approximately 95 minutes. Rated G.

Quite a while ago, I saw a trailer for this new animated movie called ``Hop''. I didn't really know what it was about. In the trailer, it just shows a bunny playing ``Song 2'' by Blur. I read what it was about. It was about the Easter Bunny (Russell Brand) and he gets hit by a car and the driver, Fred (James Marsden), has to take care of him. Then, I saw another trailer online for it months later. I wasn't sure what to think of the look of it. It didn't look like the greatest movie.
But, a month later, I saw another trailer for the movie and I have to say, it was a better trailer than the other one. So, on April 2nd, 2011, I went to a 2:20 showing of the movie. When I walked in, the theater was packed. I took my seat and watched the 95 minute kids comedy. When I walked out of the theater, I thought my experience of seeing ``Hop'' was satisfactory.
So, really the plot of the movie is that the present Easter Bunny (Hugh Laurie) wants his son (Russell Brand) to become the Easter Bunny. However, the son wants to be a drummer, not the Easter Bunny. So, he runs away from home and travels to Hollywood to pursue his dream. However, he gets hit by a car. The driver Fred (James Marsden) is a slacker who lives with his parents and has no job. When he was a kid, he saw the Easter Bunny, but no one believed him. He is supposed to be housesitting for this really rich guy and he decides to take car of the rabbit, but he turns out to be a terrible guest. He overflows a jacuzzi and trashes a fancy room. Fred tries to get rid of him, but when he finds out who he actually is, he starts to like him a bit more. Then, when he finds out that the rabbit doesn't want the job of being the Easter Bunny, Fred gets an idea: He can be the Easter Bunny.
Meanwhile, back at the home of the Easter Bunny, a grumpy Easter Chick named Carlos (Hank Azaria) is wanting to get rid of all the rabbits and become the Easter Bunny and all the other Easter Chicks will be in charge of Easter.
In the ads for this movie, they say: From the creators of ``Despicable Me''. This movie is not as good as ``Despicable Me''. In ``Despicable Me'', the super-villain Gru was not a very nice guy, but he was still funny. Yet, in ``Hop'', the Easter Bunny's son is annoying, irresponsible and he doesn't get as many laughs from me as much as I did from Gru.
Fred isn't too likable, either. He is pretty irresponsible. He can't get a job and he doesn't seem to think any job is good enough for him. Also, he lives with his parents.
The best part of the movie is Carlos and his companion Phil (also voiced by Hank Azaria). They are funny. Carlos is the bad guy, but he's funny and Phil is kind and funny. Everyone else is only okay.
But this may not be the movie for older kids and adults. If you are a really little kid, you will probably think this is the greatest film ever. In the theater, there were a lot of kids and they seemed to be loving it. In one scene, the song ``I Want Candy'' is played and there was one kid who was dancing to it. Also, after the scene was over, one kid said, ``I want candy!''
So, if you are a pre-teen, teenager or an adult, this will probably not be the best movie for you. But if you are a little kid that is 5 or 6 years old, it is most likely that you will like this movie a lot.

A Possible Shock To Some Readers

Today, I started watching the movie ``The Lion King'' for the first time. I have never seen ``The Lion King'' before. I've also never seen ``Fantasia'', ``Bambi'', ``Dumbo'', ``Aladdin'', ``Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'', ``Sleeping Beauty'', ``Beauty and the Beast'' and I don't really remember watching the whole thing of ``Cinderella'' or ``The Jungle Book''. I watched a bit of ``Cinderella'' and ``The Jungle Book'', but I don't think I saw the whole thing.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules review

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules
*** (out of four)
Starring Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn
and Robert Capron. Directed by David Bowers. Approximately 96 minutes. Rated G.

Back in March 2010, the book adaptation of author Jeff Kinney's bestselling novel ``Diary Of A Wimpy Kid'' was released in theaters. In my opinion, when I first saw the trailer, I thought that it looked like a dumb movie. However, I saw it and I really liked it a lot. Fast forward quite a few months and here I am at the screening of ``Gulliver's Travels'' and one of the previews is ``Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules'', the sequel to ``Diary Of A Wimpy Kid''. I thought that I would go see it, due to the fact that the first movie was good.
However, a couple of months later, I saw another trailer for the movie and I hardly laughed. Still, I wanted to give it a chance. So, today, I went to the 12:50 showing of it and I have to say, I was impressed.
The sequel tells the story of now-seventh-grader Greg Heffley and his life, just the way it was in the first movie. Only this time, it's not about just middle school. It also revolves around the relationship with his older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick). They do not get along well, but if you have seen the first movie, you can understand why: Rodrick is a jerk.
Finally, one morning, Greg's mom (Rachael Harris) tells Rodrick and Greg that they need to learn how to get along with each other. So, she decides to pay them play money for every hour they spend not bickering. The play money can be traded in for actual money, so that makes Rodrick happy.
The movie also tells the story of Greg's crush on the new girl Holly (Peyton List), a girl that people think Greg will have no chance with.
In some parts of the movie, we see Greg hanging out with his best friend Rowley (Robert Capron) and those parts are pretty entertaining.
This movie turned out to be a pretty good sequel to the first movie, in my opinion. The kid actors in this movie are pretty good, especially Greg's friend Rowley, who is one of the most likable characters in the movie. The message also has a good lesson about how to treat your siblings kindly, even if you fight with them at times. If you parents or kids like the sound of this movie, then you should go rent the first movie. Then, you should go see the sequel. Don't watch the trailers for the first movie or this movie. You might get turned off.

Mars Needs Moms review

Mars Needs Moms:
*** (out of four)
Includes the voices of Seth Dusky,
Joan Cusack, Dan Fogler and
Mindy Sterling.
Directed by Simon Wells.
Approximately 82 minutes, Rated PG.

Back in November, when I went to see ``Tangled'', I saw a trailer for the upcoming animated movie ``Mars Needs Moms''. Holy smokes, it looked terrible. I was only amused once during the preview and I wasn't amused too much. A few months later, I watched a movie clip of ``Mars Needs Moms''. You're probably thinking that I would think that it looked good after seeing the clip.
Nope. I thought it looked dumb still. However, next month, I had seen every movie that I could possibly see in theaters that I wanted to see and I just decided to take a risk and see ``Mars Needs Moms''. I didn't care that the critics didn't really like it. I just wanted to see a movie and let me tell you something, I didn't regret seeing the movie.
It was really good. Now, for those of you who don't know what this movie is about, I will tell you. It tells the story of Milo (voiced by Seth Dusky), a kid who hates doing his chores and being told what to do by his mother (voiced by Joan Cusack). One night, when he doesn't eat his broccoli, he tells his mother that he wished he didn't have a mother. When he feels guilty about what he said and goes to apologize, he witnesses her being abducted by aliens. He runs outside to go and save her, but he gets abducted by aliens, too.
When he reaches the aliens' home (Mars), he meets a human named Gribble (voiced by Dan Fogler). Gribble came to Mars as a kid when he tried to rescue his mom. Milo is told by Gribble that Mars needs moms and that they are stealing them from Earth so they can extract their brains and transfer the mom skills into a robot to take care of Martian babies. When they are through with the moms, they kill them. So, in order to prevent this from happening to his mom, Milo tries to rescue his mom with the help of Gribble and a kind Martian named Ki without being caught by the Supervisor (voiced by Mindy Sterling), an ugly Martian dictator.
``Mars Needs Moms'' is an exciting and sometimes funny animated movie with a good message to kids that mothers are important. Now, if you like the sound of this review and you wish to go see ``Mars Needs Moms'', you better hurry because it only grossed $6.1 million dollars and was number five at the box office when it first came out. So, the movie might not be in theaters for much longer.

Gulliver's Travels: A Different Opinion

Forget what I said about ``Gulliver's Travels''. It doesn't deserve a two and a half out of four. It was a lame movie. It deserves one and a half out of four. What a disappointing movie.

Rango Review

Rango:
*** (out of four).
Includes the voices of Johnny Depp,
Ned Beatty, Isla Fisher, Abigail
Breslin, Alfred Molina and
Bill Nighy. Directed by
Gore Verbinski. Rated PG.
Approximately 107 minutes.

Last summer, I watched a preview for the upcoming animated movie ``Rango''. I read that it was going to be including the voice acting of Johnny Depp. I watched the trailer. I have to say, it looked like such a dumb movie. I hardly laughed when I was supposed to laugh in the trailer.
Then, you fast forward to March 2011 and I am reading positive reviews of this movie. Roger Ebert is giving it four stars out of four, The Toronto Star is giving it three stars out of four and so is The Globe and Mail. Plus, RottenTomatoes gave it 89% on its TomatoMeter.
Now, here I am, giving this movie a positive review, too. Now, for those of you readers who have no idea what this movie is about, I shall give you a quick summary. ``Rango'' is the story of a chameleon (voiced by Johnny Depp) who doesn't know who he is. One day, he is in the back of a car inside a terrarium acting out skits when all of a sudden, the car hits a bump and his terrarium is thrown out of the back of the car, leaving him behind. After this, he travels to a town called Dirt. There, he makes up a character named Rango and pretends he is so tough. Then, after killing a scary hawk, he becomes sheriff of the town.
In Dirt, they have water problems. Every Wednesday, they wait for water to come, but lately, the water has not come. So, Rango decides to form a posse and tries to find the water.
This is a pretty good movie. I laughed quite a bit during the movie. The dialogue was really good in the movie. I've heard some people say that this movie is scary and not for children. This movie is not bad for children, unless you have a severe fear of snakes because there is an evil snake named Rattlesnake Jake (voiced by Bill Nighy). If you don't have a severe fear of snakes, then there's nothing to fear. It is very funny and I think kids will like it because it's not only funny, there is also a pretty cool action scene with flying hawks and gunfire.
I think the movie could have been a bit shorter, but I didn't care that much. I had fun.

Gnomeo and Juliet review

Gnomeo and Juliet:
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Includes voices of James Macavoy, Emily Blunt, Jason Statham,
Matt Lucas and Michael Caine. Directed by Kelly Asbury. Approx.
84 minutes.

A few centuries ago, the famous playwright William Shakespeare wrote a romantic play called Romeo and Juliet. It told the story of two people who fell in love and weren't supposed to fall in the love. In the end, everyone in the play gets killed, but people actually like it, believe it or not.
Now, in 2011, the director of Shrek 2, Kelly Asbury, has released a movie with basically the same story, only with garden gnomes. It tells the story of Gnomeo (ha ha), who is voiced by James Macavoy who falls in love with Juliet (Emily Blunt), a garden gnome that is part of a family that Gnomeo's family hates. They try and keep it a secret, but of course, if no one found out, this would be one heck of a boring film. So, of course, they have to have near deaths of garden gnomes and lots of destruction. This happens in this movie.
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it looked like junk. I didn't laugh once during the entire preview. However, I still saw the movie because the critics didn't pan it. It turned out to be not so bad. I laughed at some of the jokes. For example, a garden reindeer (Ozzy Osbourne) is playing a guessing game and his ideas are always guessed.
``Okay, I'm thinking of a movie. It's one word and it starts with ``spider''.''
``Spiderman?''
``Wow! You're really good at this! Okay, now I'm thinking of a movie. It's two words and starts with ``Spiderman''.''
`` ``Spiderman 2''?''
``Okay, who's cheating?''
However, this movie was not like any of my favourite animated movies such as ``Toy Story 3'', ``Fantastic Mr. Fox'', ``Despicable Me'' or ``Up''. However, I'm pretty sure this movie was not trying to be a piece of art. I think it was just supposed to be a quick and enjoyable animated movie for kids. If that was the creator of this movie's goal, then they succeeded. I think kids will like this movie a lot. It's got some action and it's got a lot of comedy. So, it's no instant classic, but heck, it's not too bad.

New Movie Trailers

A couple of days ago, I watched three 30 second trailers. One was for the upcoming Transformers: Dark Of the Moon. I have a feeling that it will be pretty entertaining. Also, there was a preview for the upcoming J.J. Abrams flick Super 8. Back in May, I saw the teaser trailer for it when I went to see Iron Man 2 (good movie). It was pretty mysterious looking. It just showed a truck drive into a train, explode and then, they showed that someone (or something) was pounding on a door of a train. Then, the trailer ended. This trailer I saw was a small town and then the truck crashing into the train. Then, there was the pounding and lots of action. There was also the preview for Captain America: The First Avenger. This was the least impressive trailer I viewed. It looked kind of... cheesy. I will still give it a try, though.
