You Again Movie Review

You Again: *** stars (out of 4)
Starring: Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Victor Garber, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman, Kristen Chenoweth and Betty White. Directed by Andy Fickman. Approximately 112 minutes. This was playing at major theaters, but it came out last month, so it is probably only playing in one theater now. Rated PG.

When I first saw the preview for You Again, I thought it looked funny. However, after at least 20 viewings of the preview as I went to the movies over the next few months began to get to me. This was getting on my nerves. I went to see the movie, still. It was actually pretty entertaining. It's not my favourite movie of all time, but heck, I still enjoyed it. You Again tells the story of Marni (Kristen Bell), she is a public relations executive who works in New York. That's not what she was like in high school, though. She had zits, glasses and was bullied by a horrible girl named Jay-Jay (Odette Yustman) who's real name was Joanna. At least 8 years later, Marni finds out the bully is going to marry Marni's brother. Marni freaks out and tries to convince her mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) that the soon-to-be-wife of her brother is horrible. But the mom has problems of her own. It turns out that Joanna's aunt (Sigourney Weaver) is a person who wasn't very nice to Marni's mom in high school. Of course, everything goes wrong in this movie including dance lessons with a dotty dance instructor (Kristen Chenoweth), a denture wearing grandma (Betty White) and an ex-boyfriend of Joanna who is still in love with her. This movie could have gone wrong in so many different ways, but it is actually entertaining. Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Betty White, the ex-boyfriend and the dad (Victor Garber) were funny. So, I think that this is worth seeing. Apparently, critics hate this movie such as Richard Roeper. He gave it an F in his website. I don't agree. I think that this is worth seeing, even though it's not the best film I've ever seen.

My Experience With Film Festivals

Twice in the year of 2010, I have been to a film festivals. The first one I went to was in April and it was called Sprockets Film Festival. Sprockets is a film festival for kids. I saw two foreign films. Both of them were from Denmark. The first film that I saw there was Karla and Katrine. Karla and Katrine tells the story of a Danish girl named Karla. She lives with her mom, her two brothers and her stepdad. I guess the mom divorced the original dad. Anyways, Karla had a best friend named Katrine, but she hasn't hung out with her in ages. So, she decides to invite Katrine to her summer house out in the country. Katrine accepts the offer. When they get there and go out for a walk, these two creepy punks try and mug them. Fortunately, some young guy named Jonas rescues them. People in the town where the summer house is think that Jonas is some sort of shoplifter. Karla and Katrine don't, though. Oh, the mom also took her depressed friend along with her. The friend is female and was in a relationship that ended badly. The dad has a problem, though. The mom won't spend any time with him. I know, cold. This movie was fantastic. I loved it. It was way better than the second movie that I will tell you about quite soon. Plus, this movie was an approximate running time of 84 minutes. Now, I shall tell you about the second film. The plot is quite simple. The title is Max Embarrassing and it's about Max, a teenager who has an embarrassing mom, a crush on a girl in his class and a neighbor who does very strange activities. That is basically the plot. It's just about his life. This was not nearly as good as the first film I saw. I found that it went on a little too long (it ran for 90 minutes, 6 minutes longer than Karla and Katrine) and that it just wasn't as interesting. It still was worth seeing, though. Okay, so fast forward 5 months into my life and I am standing in AMC Yonge and Dundas Theater in Toronto, Canada. I am here to see a movie at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). Toronto International Film Festival started in 1976. It has been the starting point for films that are famous in the movie world today such as Almost Famous (bad-duh-da), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Lost In Translation. Cool, huh? Anyways, I was there at TIFF 200. I didn't see any films in English, though. I didn't see the films I wished I could see like Easy A, It's Kind Of A Funny Story and The Town. Yep, I rocked another Danish film. It was actually about some of the characters from the first movie I talked about. It is called Karla and Jonas and it tells the story of the characters from Karla and Katrine, Karla and Jonas. In the film, Jonas is living in a foster home and his only friend is an adult. Sadly, the adult is leaving to work at another foster home. Jonas gets ticked off and storms out of the home. Then, Karla decides to help Jonas by trying to find his biological mother. That is all it is about. Nothing too complicated. This wasn't as good as Karla and Katrine, but it still was entertaining. Why was it not better than the movie Karla and Katrine? I don't know, but it just wasn't. What was cool was that I got to meet the director. It was no big name director like Ang Lee or Atom Egoyan, but it was still cool. So, it wasn't as good as the first film festival movie I saw. Big deal. I had a great time. So, that is all the experience I have had with film festivals. Hopefully, I get to go to another one.

Megamind

Well, next week, the movie Megamind comes out. In case you don't know what this movie is, I will tell you what it is. Megamind has voices such as Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and you may be surprised by this but... Brad Pitt. Yes, I said it and it's true. It's in the previews and it's on the internet. Anyways, I was going to give a synopsis of the movie. Megamind tells the story of the title character who is voiced by Will Ferrell. He's an alien who has an arch nemesis named Metro Man who is voiced by Brad Pitt. Anyways, it's just really about the battle between good and evil or something like that. It looked pretty funny, so I'm looking forward to it. I just wanted to tell you readers about it.

Great Movie Characters

Warning About Netflix

I'm not sure if you have heard of it, but there is something called Netflix. Netflix is a movie source where you can get any movie, any time you want. True or false? FALSE!!!!!!!! False, false, false, false, FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! None of that is true! I went on the site, they didn't have Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Juno and Little Miss Sunshine. Plus, my family is (or was) a fan of The Office, the TV show with Steve Carrel. They had none of the seasons! British and American! Man, my brother has more movies than Netflix I bet! Also, they would say that it wasn't available and they'd suggest some stuff that I didn't even care about! Except for this one movie I looked up that wasn't available. They suggested Say Anything, with John Cusack. It's supposed to be good. But I'll just rent it at the video store. Anyways, I just wanted to give you readers a warning. I haven't used it, but I think I saved my family from wasting money!

Apology

I apologize for spelling mistakes readers might see. I'll try to look for that next time.

Why I Think the Book `` The Highly Effective Detective'' Should Be Made Into A Film

A couple of months ago, I finished reading a book called The Highly Effective Detective by Richard Yancey. It tells the story of Theodore Ruzak (nicknamed Teddy). Teddy as a child loved detective work. he would read books like Sherlock Holmes and Encyclopedia Brown. Now, he is in his thirties, has a job as a night guard and and no parents. When his mom leaves him a stash of money behind, he decides to go into the detective business with a waitress named Felicia. Felicia becomes Teddy's secretary. Soon enough, he is given a case. A man named Parker Hudson comes to him to tell him about a geese killer. Geese were crossing the road, when a giant SUV just ran them over. And. Didn't. Look. Back. Cold, I know. A long story short, the plot is Teddy tring to find out the killer of these geese. I think that this should become a movie. Why, you ask? Well, I'll tell you why. Teddy has a really interesting thought process. When I read what he would say in his mind, it made me laugh. Hopefully, you hear his thoughts. If the film industry does make a movie out of this, I sure hope that they don't use poor casting. It would ruin it for me. Anyways, I just wanted to tell you about that.

A Poor Book Adaptation

Alex Rider was born as a book character. Who thought him up? The British author Anthony Horowitz. The first book was called Stormbreaker. I liked it. The author went on to write more of these Alex Rider books. I read the books after I saw the movie. However, when someone made the movie version of Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker, I found out that it was not the best book adaptation. I found the action extremely stupid and it wasn't even included in the book. Also, whoever though up a horseracing scene and put it in this movie was out of their mind. Who in the world find that interesting in an action movie (John Woo, director of Mission: Impossible II, this means you)? Another ridiculous scene that could have bee mildly entertaining was a scene where the protagonist's nanny gets in a fight with one of the villain's. The directors seemed to want to make it as childish as possible, including blowfish needles getting shoved in someone's hand. Also, they hardly showed anything. Whenever they were going to hit each other, it showed some cartoon on the TV in the house. Come on! It's an action movie, for crying out loud! That is what you directors were trying to do, right? Make an action movie? So, it wasn't the worst film ever, but it definitely could have been better.

A Great Book Adaptation

A great book adaptation is Fantastic Mr. Fox. Wes Anderson directs it and the movie is based on a book by Roald Dahl. Fantastic Mr. Fox tells the story of Mr. Fox. Mr. Fox is a fox voiced by George Clooney and he is a former food stealer who decides to pull off one last, big job. Along with the scheme, he takes his plumber, his nephew, a badger real estate agent (Bill Murray), his fox son (Jason Schwartzman), his fox wife (Meryl Streep) and practically every other animal in the neighborhood. Now, usually book adaptations are rather weak. however, this is way better than the book. Wes Anderson makes the humor so much better by making it deadpan and so bizarre! Plus, Wes Anderson uses really cool stop-motion animation. I love this movie. In fact, it is one of my favourite movies.
